Derrick Smoker Freeman

Derrick (Smoker) Freeman (born May 17, 1974) is an American musician, drummer, songwriter, bandleader, actor, and podcast host known for his contributions to New Orleans’ vibrant music scene. Originally from Houston, Texas, Freeman has built a career blending jazz, funk, hip-hop, and second-line rhythms into a distinctive sound.  

Early Life and Education

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Freeman developed a passion for music at an early age. He attended the High School for Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, where he honed his drumming skills and explored various musical genres, including jazz and classical percussion. His early influences included hip-hop, comedy, and musical theater, which later shaped his unique approach to performance.   

Career

Freeman moved to New Orleans to further his musical career and quickly became a fixture in the city’s music scene. He received mentorship from Ellis Marsalis and Harold Battiste, two legendary figures in jazz, which helped him refine his craft.  

He gained recognition as a drummer and vocalist, performing with various New Orleans-based groups, including Soul Brass Band and Smokers World. His ability to seamlessly merge traditional New Orleans sounds with modern influences has made him a standout artist in the city’s diverse musical landscape.  

Freeman was also a regular member of Kermit Ruffins' band, touring extensively and learning valuable lessons about live performance and audience engagement.  

In addition to his work as a performer, Freeman has pursued solo projects and collaborations. His presentation on New Orleans Music New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park highlights his dedication to preserving and educating others about the city’s rich musical traditions.  

Freeman has also spoken about the challenges and rewards of being a musician in New Orleans, sharing insights on Tipitina’s TV about the hustle of performing, managing projects, and staying connected within the industry.  

Freeman also leads the Low End Theory Players – A live hip-hop cover band paying tribute to A Tribe Called Quest and other hip-hop legends. The group blends live instrumentation with classic hip-hop beats, performing at venues like Tipitina’s. 

Acting Career

Freeman appeared in the HBO series Treme, where he played a fictionalized version of himself. The show, created by David Simon and Eric Overmyer, explores the lives of New Orleans residents rebuilding their community after Hurricane Katrina.  

He was featured as the drummer for Kermit Ruffins' band, The Barbeque Swingers, making guest appearances in Season 1, Season 2, and Season 4, with uncredited appearances in Season 3. His involvement in Treme showcased his drumming talents and further solidified his presence in the city’s artistic community.  

Global Tours and Performances

Freeman has traveled internationally with Soul Brass Band, bringing the vibrant sounds of New Orleans to audiences worldwide. The band performs at prestigious festivals and venues, including:  

The North Sea Jazz Festival  – One of Europe’s largest jazz festivals, showcasing their fusion of brass band traditions with funk and soul.  Freeman also performed with Macy Gray at the 2019 North Sea Jazz Festival, joining her for a live rendition of White Man. 

Telluride Jazz Festival – A celebrated event in Colorado, where Soul Brass Band introduced their unique sound to a diverse audience.  

Tel Aviv Jazz Festival – Bringing New Orleans brass band energy to an international audience.  

Tipitina’s – A legendary New Orleans venue that has hosted some of the biggest names in jazz and funk.  

Jazz Fest  – A staple of New Orleans music culture, where Freeman and Soul Brass Band have been featured performers.  

Albums and Musical Collaborations

Solo Albums - Including Blurple Pain and DWB (Driving While Black), which reflect Freeman’s unique blend of musical styles.  

Freeman has worked with Ivan Neville on multiple projects, including an in-depth conversation on The Shadow People podcast. In Episode 9, Neville shares stories about his early days with The Neville Brothers, his experiences touring with The Rolling Stones, and insights into the New Orleans funk scene.

Freeman also performed alongside Stanton Moore, the renowned drummer for Galactic. Their collaborations highlight Freeman’s ability to blend funk, jazz, and second-line rhythms with Moore’s dynamic drumming style.

Podcast and Media Presence

Freeman co-hosts The Shadow People, a podcast that offers a raw and insightful look into New Orleans music, culture, and the realities of being a working musician. Alongside Grammy-nominated keyboardist Nigel Hall, Freeman dives into spirited discussions on everything from Jazz Fest highs and lows to the evolution of hip-hop and the state of live music.  Episode 15: DJ Jazzy Jeff on Philly, Neo-Soul, & Why You Need to Release Your Music

In this monumental episode, Freeman and Hall sit down with DJ Jazzy Jeff for a wide-ranging conversation on music production, the Philadelphia scene, and the importance of releasing creative work. Jeff shares wisdom on the origins of Jill Scott’s debut album, the Neo-Soul movement, and why artists should never let their work sit unfinished.  

Community Involvement: 

Freeman has contributed to Funky Uncle Live, a non-profit organization supporting New Orleans musicians and gig workers. The initiative, which began as a weekly webcast during the COVID-19 pandemic, has raised over $850,000 and helped more than 900 musicians.

Freeman remains an influential figure in New Orleans music, bridging traditional sounds with contemporary innovation. His commitment to preserving and evolving the city’s rich musical traditions has solidified his place as a respected artist in the industry.
